Pierre Thomas and the New Orleans Saints hosted the San Diego Chargers on Friday night, this was the third preseason game for the Saints. The 3rd preseason game is the most important one… we see the starters play into the 3rd quarter. Pierre Thomas got a lot of game action – he had 7 carries for 41 yards (5.9 ypc) and 2 receptions for 17 yards.
The Saints offense looked great, especially with Pierre Thomas leading the way out of the backfield. The Saints beat the Chargers by a final score of 36-21.
I’m not sure how much PT will play in the final preseason game … if he does, it will only be for a series or two.
Those of you still waiting for your fantasy football draft, I would take Thomas with confidence as a strong #2 back. No one in the Saints backfield is going to push him for carries.

The New Orleans Saints beat the New England Patriots in their preseason opener last week. Pierre Thomas was in action and say plenty of playing time during the first two quarters.
Thomas had 8 carries for 27 yards (not great but not bad) and 4 receptions for 26 yards. Pierre has always been solid out of the backfield, but I am really intrigued by the way he got so many receptions in just the first half. PT only averaged about 2.5 receptions a game last year. We could be in for a 50+ reception year if Pierre gets more playing time. That would make his value on the team and in Fantasy Leagues increase tremendously.
We will bring you a Preseason Game 2 preview in the coming days.

Tonight the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2010 NFL Preseason schedule tonight at 7:30 EST in New England against the Patriots. I wouldn’t expect much from Pierre Thomas tonight – maybe 4 or 5 carries at the most. The Saints just lost RB Lynell Hamilton to a season ending ACL injury so they are down a man at that position, but will not risk having Pierre on the field where he can innjury himself in a meaningless game. He’ll probably play the opening series and maybe one more.
The biggest thing for Pierre to do tonight he get a few reps and get hit once or twice. After going all offseason without getting hit, it’s important for running backs to get that first lick of the season out of the way early.
Doesn’t matter who wins this game, but I’m going with Saints 28-24.

From everything I’ve been reading, it appears Pierre Thomas is having a pretty good training camp so far. He missed some time due to injury, but has been participating in drills and the team scrimmage. He’ll be good to go for the Saints first preseason game next weekend.
The New Orleans Saints are glad to have him on the field, despite not reaching a long term deal. Thomas signed a one- $1.684 million tender offer last month. Sounds like a lot of money to the working man but it’s peanuts for someone who fancies himself as a starter for the Super Bowl Champs.
Thomas will have a lot to prove this season. If he can rack up some big numbers in the first six weeks, the Saints will give him a new long term deal in October.
Next week we’ll start bringing you some game previews and more fantasy football news.

The New Orleans Saints started the 2010 Train Camp schedule on Friday. Pierre Thomas, with his new 1-year $1.7 million deal he recently signed, was on site and ready to get to work. Thomas fought for a new contract all offseason, demanding a long term deal that woulc compensate him after a strong 2009 season in which he contributed greatly to the Saints Super Bowl win.
“It’s something we’re going to work out,” Thomas said Friday morning, after the Saints’ first workout. “I’m here for right now, and I’m going to give it my all this year. I’m concentrating on the season. As soon as I start getting out on this field, practicing with my teammates, all I’m focused on is what I can do to get better and what I can do to help my team get better.
“That’s how it is sometimes. What can you do, except bite your lip and move forward?”
Exactly.
“He might be pissed off,” General Manager Mickey Loomis said. “I understand that. I’ve said more than once that for a player, his contract is a personal issue, and from the club perspective, it’s a business issue. I always try to be sensitive to that. But I appreciate that he’s here. It’s noticed. We don’t take it for granted.
“We can hopefully negotiate a contract that we both feel good about. There’s always a difference of opinion. What you hope is that the difference of opinion is small and narrow, and you can find ways to bridge the gap. But at this point, we’ve had a larger difference of opinion. It’s really as simple as that.
“I respect his opinion, respect the opinion of his agent. As with any negotiation, both sides make some pretty strong and valid points. (But) we haven’t been able to come to terms yet.”

Early mock drafts from Fantasy Football Calculator have Pierre Thomas listed as the #15 back in fantasy football for the 2010 season. This puts him towards the end of the third round.
A lot of things could happen to move Pierre Thomas closer to the #10 spot … some guys ahead of him could get injured, PT could land a long term deal, Reggie Bush could get injured, etc.
Where do you think PT will go in your fantasy draft?

Ever wonder what an authentic Pierre Thomas autograph looks like? This photo was taken in March, following the Saints Super Bowl win.

Runningback Pierre Thomas was absent from the New Orleans Saints mandatory minicamp that opened up last Friday. It was only a couple of weeks ago that rumors were flying that the Saints were presenting Thomas with a new long term offer. Nothing ever came of that, but we are hearing that both sides are negotiating.
Thomas doesn’t want to show up for camp and workouts without a long term deal. If he got injured on the field under a 1 year tender he would be screwed.

Last week it was reported by all major media outlets that the New Orleans Saints were just a day or two away from offering Pierre Thomas a long term deal – it was allegedly in the books and ready to go. Here we are several days later and not a word has come out of the Saints organization about a new contract. Both sides have been completely silent.
I read on a Saints forum that the news of a long term contract was completely bogus and made up by the media. The source said neither side ever received anything about a contract. Hmmm…. who to believe?
I still am certain PT will get his long term deal, probably around training camp time.
